How to control your own DNS settings for PlayStation Home on PS3 / RPCS3.
The various PSHome third party providers all offer their own DNS solutions that can be utilized when accessing their PlayStation Home services. These teams are awesome and have gone out of their way setup the easiest entry point for non-technical users to access their services. However, there are several reasons you may want to consider hosting your own DNS services:
- Reliance on upstream DNS could result in accidental DNS mismanagement:
- Other non-related domains could be redirected to incorrect IP(s) via malicious intent through upset insiders, hackers, or through incompetence.
- DNS Cache Poisoning is a known security threat that has the potential to impact any less secure DNS services.
- This is just a hobby for these nice folks, this is not their full-time job to ensure peak security measures at any given time.
- If you already have a self-hosted DNS instance setup for your home that is the default DNS configuration for all devices on your network, then this is a simple configuration that makes it so you don’t have to constantly adjust the PS3 network for various tasks.
For these reasons, and especially if you already have a self-hosted DNS service, I recommend making the below quick modifications.
Prerequisites:
- Pi-Hole (other self-hosted solutions may also work): <Reference to another article that I will write>.
- Automatic DNS settings configured in your router pointing to Pi-Hole.
- PS3 connected to Wi-Fi network with automatic DNS settings inherited from router.
How to Add Override
Please be advised, you cannot have DNS entries from both lists below. You will have to clear them out manually if you are planning on swapping from one to another. This can be done by either selecting delete for each existing option, or removing all the items from the list manually by editing /etc/pihole/custom.list.
- Access your Pi-Hole service, navigate to the “Local DNS” > “DNS Records” in the left hand bar
- Copy the comma separated list and input into “Domain” textbox.
- Copy IP Address and input into “IP Address:” textbox.
- Select “Add” button.
Home Laboratory
Home Laboratory (AKA PS Homeology Lab) is a QA server that offers several tools that allow you to interact with your PlayStation Home user account live during gameplay. Additionally, this is the team that originally developed the third-party hosted PlayStation Home services. They have been instrumental in gathering cache from PlayStation home users and making it available for everyone to enjoy.
The below information can be utilized to access their PlayStation Home services without relying on their DNS servers.

This is a closed source service for PlayStation Home users who require you share cache without sharing to the other services. They are currently in Closed Beta 2 (as of 12/27/2024). You will need to access their discord server to request access.
As they are closed source and not sharing their cache with the other servers anymore, please take this into consideration before using their services.
Note: If use their services, they will require that you verify any caches stored on your PS3 before granting you access and automatically upload your cache on the first time accessing their service.
